Why categories matter
Categories tell Google what kind of business you are. They influence which searches your profile is considered for and which attributes and features are available to you.
Choosing a primary category
Pick the category that best describes your main business, not the most popular one in your industry. If you are a plumber, "Plumber" is more accurate than a broader category such as "Contractor".
Adding secondary categories
Add other categories only for services you genuinely offer. Adding unrelated categories to appear in more searches tends to confuse customers and can work against you.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a category because a competitor uses it
- Adding many loosely related categories
- Not reviewing categories after your services change
- Ignoring the services list that goes with the category
